<p>Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is best known to be a condition when body organ does not produce enough or not properly responding to insulin, a hormone produced in Pancreas. In urban individual, rise in sugar level, is the major cause due to food habits as well. Since time immoral our Ayurvedic physicians diagnose and treat diabetes through bitter melon or you can say bitter gourd commonly known as Karela in Hindi. It is scientifically proven that bitter gourd controls the sugar in an individual because it contains hypoglycemic compound e.g. natural insulin.</p>
<p>Bitter Gourd (Karela) generally grown in summer and humid conditions but now a days it is available throughout the year. Regular consumption of bitter gourd juice showed the best results in improving the energy level and stamina in the individual. Even it has also been noticed that regular consumption of bitter gourd, improve in the condition of sleeping disorder, in individual.</p>

It has also insulin like compound known as polypeptide P which has been suggested as insulin replacement in some diabetic patients.</p>

<td width="73%">Karonda   (Carissa carandas)  is an  evergreen deciduous  small to big   shrub usually 2-4 m tall . The stem is rich in white latex and the branches   contain sharp spines . Flowers are small, measuring 3-5 cm in diameter, with   white colour. The fruit is a berry, which is formed in clusters of 3-10   fruits. The fruit is globose to broad ovoid in shape and contains<br />
many seeds. Young fruits are pinkish white and become red to dark purple when   ripe. Ripe fruit color vary from white, green and pinkish red depending on   the genotype. Flowering starts in the month of  January-February and   fruits mature in May-June. Fruits are generally harvested at immature stage   for vegetable purpose, fully ripen fruits are consumed fresh or   processed.</p>

<p>The karonda fruit is   a rich source of iron and contains a fair amount of Vitamin C.<br />
<strong>Traditional   medicinal uses of Karonda:</strong></p>
<p>Karonda fruits is an   astringent, asntiscorbuticand and useful for cure of anemia, urinary tract   infection. It also quite useful to improve female libido and to remove worms   from the intestinal tract. The fruit have an analgesic action as well as an   anti –inflamatory one. The juice can be applied to the skin to relieve any   skin problems. Traditionally Karonda has been used to treart anorexia and   insanity. <p>Diabetes and Stevia<br />
Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in this country, adult population is more affected. Surprisingly reports are quite shocking that now it is increasing in child, too. People with the disease often are prone to high blood pressure, vision changes and decreases in arterial blood flow, which can lead to heart disease or stroke.<br />
There are many reasons for the increase of diabetes, among them obesity, sedentary lifestyles, hereditary/genetic and to some extend sugar consumption.<br />
Stevia is natural sweetener; sources are from shrubs that contain no harmful chemicals and tastes just like real sugar.  In fact, Stevia is much sweeter than real sugar and artificial sweeteners. Most importantly, Stevia shows zero glycemic index and zero calories.<br />
Stevia is derived from a South American shrub and is recommended to anyone with diabetes, or those looking for a natural, low-carb sweetener.  The most important benefit for diabetics is that Stevia stimulates the release of insulin and also normalizes the response to glucose, especially in type 2 diabetes.<br />
Stevia is also used as a therapeutic treatment for hyperglycemia.<br />
Studies have concluding that Stevia possesses anti-diabetic properties that help to reduce blood pressure; control blood sugar levels and even tone the heart muscle for a healthy heart.<br />
Interestingly, nature has provided a sugar substitute called stevia.  Wild stevia is a perennial shrub native to the Amambay mountain region in Paraguay.  It has been used for centuries by the natives as a sweetener and in the 1800s was &#8220;re-discovered&#8221; and used throughout Latin America.  In 1931, stevioside was isolated as the active part of the stevia leaf.  The Japanese use it and today it accounts for about 41 percent of their total artificial sweetener market.<br />
Medical publications have shown that it affects calcium transport in a way that is similar to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers (like verapamil), which commonly are used to treat high blood pressure.  In laboratory animals, stevia also can induce diuresis or water release, similar to diuretics also used to treat high blood pressure.<br />
One study even showed that stevia could prevent infection by the rotavirus, a common viral infection among school-age children.<br />
It has been claimed that stevia can help skin conditions and stomach problems and enhance immunity but these have not been examined by the medical community. Raw leaves might be contaminated by bacteria and fungi and I do not recommend their use.<br />

<p><strong>Prevention is better than cure</strong>, the phrase is quite appropriate even, today.</p>

Though, majority of the younger generations, even today, talking more on the lines of “Wealth is Health”, the mantra of the day and prevention has no meaning for them.</p>
<p>Mr. Harsh Swaroop, Executive Vice President of one of the MNC, a few months back turned to age of 38. A very hard worker-better to say –workaholic, 14-16 hours hectic work schedule, suddenly one day discovered that he had Blood Pressure and Diabetes. The laboratory report disclosed as an unpleasant shock to him and his family. Doctor has advised him for proper treatment and rest for few days but he was not ready to take leave because of his responsibilities of day to day work schedule. I would say if he would have been taken care of his daily routine, diet and exercise, he would not have been come in to the grip of such problems. This all can be prevented if one can manage properly his daily routine and proper and control diet and regular light exercise.</p>
<p>This is not only one simple case study but when you look around, you will find that the  most of the people, men or women, no gender differentiation, when reach to age of 38-40 are diagnosed, with so called diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, stress, strokes, spondalities, heart attack, etc.This is all because of hectic- hap-hazards life style, wrong food habits, no proper work schedule, late night parties, no sound sleep, avoiding morning walk and exercise, preferences and priorities are to earn more money and live lavish life style but all in stressful environment. When they discover all these problems, their growths in all respect are checked. MNCs and even most of the Indian companies also, have made the thumb rule that regular health check-up is compulsory. The career growth is also affected.</p>
<p>Thus, no way but to prevent yourself from so called illness and it is very clear that “Prevention is better than cure” and more appropriate rather than treating the –diseases. The growing consciousness about the health issues among people is very positive.</p>
<p><strong>Qualitative food is the base of healthy life. A lot of health problems-illness can be prevented with day to day foods which we intake regularly.</strong></p>

A wrestler always required more calories while a person sitting on the table would prefer less than the usual diet. One should be very particular about the food and digestion. If your digestion is not in order then you will suffer with a number of diseases. Avoid over eating and give preference to veggies. Between two meals, at least 3 hours gap is advisable for good health. Neither keeps your stomach full nor should it be empty.</p>
<p>World health organization has reported that in India around 6 crore people are suffering from heart problems only. The number is increasing day by day. Thus, again we should say prevention is better than cure and there is no option but to change your life style and food habits, if you want to live long and healthy life.</p>
<p>To keep fit you check your intake everyday, what you are taking and what to be taken.</p>
<p>In our day to day food, 50-60% intake should be <strong>Carbohydrates</strong>-the rich source of our energy. The sources of Carbohydrates are milk, fruits, grains, rice, pasta; starch based green vegetables-all fiber based food substance. Importance of fibers: fiber help in our digestive systems. At least 30-50 grms fiber must be taken. Fiber based food substance are Oatmeal, Seeds, dry peas, pulses, strawberry, blueberry. These all food substance is good to lower down the cholesterol in blood and thus can prevent from heart stroke or any other heart problems.</p>
<p><strong>Protein: O</strong>ut of total calories, scheduled for a day, 15-20 % protein should be taken every day. World health organization has disclosed that at least 50 grms protein must be taken every day. Protein rich diet is milk, paneer, curds, meat and fish. But give preference to veggie proteins. It has also been detected that non vegetarian are more pro to heart problems as compared to Vegetarians. Protein is required to maintain the body cells.</p>
<p>If you are taking good and qualitative food and your stomach is full your body resistance will increase and you can easily avoid even the seasonal affect. Think, when season changes, some people are affected not the all; it is all because of power of body resistance-immunity, already developed with in the body itself with good, qualitative food. Empty stomachs will always create the problems</p>

<p><strong>Our kitchen</strong> is the best place for treatment of several diseases. In Indian kitchen a lot of spices are available through which one can take be prevented from certain causes of ill-health.
