Sleeping while reading or watching T.V causes a head ache and blinking of the eyes. T.V should be watched from a distance of 10 feet. The eyes should be protected from perils such as late-nights, smoke and sunlight. Consuming stale food stuff, food stuff that takes long to digest, smoking and drinking should be stopped. If an insect or any dirt has gotten into the eye, close your eyes, walk three steps backwards and then rub the eye in which the dirt has gone. It will come out. Do not rub the other eye.
Remedies for keeping the eyes healthy:
- As soon as you wake up, fill the mouth with water till it is full like a balloon. Then splash the face with cool water lightly. This makes eye-sight better and cures eye-related diseases.
- Soak ‘Triphala” powder in an earthen vessel over night. In the morning wash the eyes with the same distilled water. This improves eye-sight and prevents eye-related diseases.
- Massaging the soles of the feet with Mustard oil and applying Mustard oil to the toes before a bath improves eye-sight and prevents eye-related diseases.
- Good sleep is essential for the good health of the eyes. Lack of sleep induces dark circles under the eyes and blurriness.
- One should not read continuously. Eyes need rest. One should also not look at the sun directly.
- One should not read while travelling.
- One should walk on fresh green grass bare-foot early in the morning.
- Excessive smoking and drinking can harm the eyes.
- When playing sports like Archery and ‘Gilli Danda’, kids should be supervised and taken care of.
- Mix and grind to a fine powder 10 grams of small green Cardamom and 20 grams Fenyl seeds. Having one spoon regularly with milk improves eye-sight.
- If the eyes are swollen, apply the paste of Neem on the toe of the opposite foot (Right toe for left eye and left toe for the right eye). The redness and swelling of the eye will reduce immediately.
- The deficiency of Vitamin A causes diseases of the eyes.
- The deficiency of Vitamin A renders many adults as well as children blind. It is most important that pregnant women should take Vitamin A supplements. A new-born should most compulsively be given its mother’s milk for 6 months at least.
Illnesses of the eyes:
- Boils on the eyes – Often boils appear on the eyelids which prove to be a big problem. For this, take a leaf of Mango and squeeze out the juice from its stem and apply it on the boil. Once or twice should give relief.
- Poor eye-sight – Mix powdered Almonds, powdered Fenyl seeds and Mishri all in the proportion of 100 grams each and store it in a bottle with a tight lid. Take a spoonful of this mixture with milk every night to improve eye-sight.
- Things that help improve eye-sight – Carrots have high levels of Carotene which help improve eye-sight. Eggs, Broccoli, Brussels, Kiwi fruit are foods which help prevent cataract. Corn helps in keeping at bay the diseases which attack the eyes in old age.
- Eye-sight – Before bathing, apply mustard oil on the toes of the feet every day. Eye-sight will remain strong for very long.
- Cataract – To prevent cataract, apply the paste of pure sandalwood on the forehead.
- Pain in the eyes – If pain develops in any of the eyes, stuff a piece of cotton in the same ear. If it happens in both eyes, stuff cotton in both ears. It will relieve the pain for at least 2-3 hours.
- Eye-flu – This disease spreads due to the moisture in the air during rains. This disease causes redness of the eyes, watering of the eyes and stinging in the eyes.
Remedy:
- Use spectacles during eye-flu.
- Do not shake hands with anyone.
- Do not rub the eyes with hands.
- Do not send the infected child to school.
- Wash the eyes with lukewarm water 3-4 times a day.
- The infected should rest for 3-4 days.
- The towel and handkerchief of the infected must not be used by anyone else.
- During pregnancy one should be careful to not contract any eye diseases. Although it is not like all pregnant women can contract eye-diseases, but those women with poor eye-sight must be careful and keep getting tests done. No operation should be performed on the eyes during pregnancy.
Usage of Vitamin E prevents Cataract:
Those who are nourished with ample Vitamin E through their food intake minimise the risk of contacting a Cataract. An antioxidant like Vitamin E helps protect the eye lens from free radicals. Fruits and vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, help protect the eyes. Those who are nourished with Vitamin E by the means of either their food or supplements are safer from Cataract. Vitamin E is present in all kinds of oil, fruits and seeds. Improving eating habits in time can sort out all difficulties of the body.
Looking after the eyes – eat fibrous fruits
- Keep away from stress and strain and insomnia.
- Vitamin A plays a very major role in keeping the eye-sight intact. Eat Carrots, Papaya, Mango, Oregano (Ajwain), milk and butter for Vitamin A nutrition.
- Clean all around the eyes with Rogan Badam oil or any cream. Massage lightly. Do this procedure before sleeping and wipe off the cream as well.
- Do not try to remove Kohl and make-up from the eyes by washing it with soap and water and rubbing the eyes with a coarse towel. This causes wrinkles. Always clean around the eyes with a cream. To wipe off the cream use a wet piece of cotton. Soak a piece of cotton in Cucumber juice and store it in the refrigerator. Place it on the eyes while sleeping in the afternoon. Soak cotton in Rose water and place it on the eyes.
- To keep the eyes healthy and avoid spectacles, regularly adopt the practice of filling the mouth with water and splashing water on the face 25-50 times. This can be done twice a day.
- If the eyes are burning or you have just come back out of the sun, place strips of cloth soaked in ice for a little while for relief.
- Do not use Kohl if you have dark circles.
- Walk bare-foot on dewy grass.
- Does reading in poor light or in a sleeping posture weaken the eyes and make them water? It doesn’t weaken the eyes, but due to the head-ache it makes the eyes water and the change in position does not serve well.
- Does reading too much or reading while travelling weaken the eyes? Reading too much, reading while travelling or watching too much T.V doesn’t weaken the eyes but these activities definitely do make the eyes tired. It can also cause a head ache. We must get our eyes checked every once in a while.

To keep our eyes healthy the important thing is to know which Vitamins are necessary for the eyes.
Vitamin A – It prevents even age-related problems of the eyes. Those who smoke or drink must be careful to have proper Vitamin A supply.
Vitamins A sources – Carrots, Papaya, Sweet potato and Cod liver oil.
Vitamins E – Helps prevent age-related eye disorders such as Cataracts.
Vitamin E sources – Dry fruits, Mango, Sunflower seed oil.
Vitamin C – helps prevent ailments related to Diabetes, prevents ills caused by smoking and drinking.
Sources – Gooseberry (Amla), Broccoli and sour fruits.
To keep the eyes healthy, colourful fruits and vegetables are very important.
Despite being nourished by these Vitamins, one must be careful about certain things. Like –
- Get eyes checked regularly.
- Do not use any medicines for the eyes without a doctor’s prescription.
- Include ample Vitamins A and C in meals.
- Do not watch T.V while sleeping or in the dark.
- Do not cook vegetables for too long or with too much spice. It destroys nutrition.
